Professional CV Writers – Pros and Cons

·         Isn’t the best person to sell my skills on my CV me?
·         Surely we know more about ourselves than a 3rd party does?
·         How can someone else make me sound so much better on my CV than I can?

The above are all thoughts that have gone through our heads once we start writing our CVs. So what are the benefits and pitfalls of going to a professional CV writer?

Let us initially look at the benefits:

1.      Most CV writers are experts in the written word
2.      They can guarantee a grammatically correct document
3.      They have years of experience designing and formatting interview winning CVs
4.      Their work is not dated and therefore can impress the potential employer immediately
5.      It can be a cost effective solution if you are not gaining interviews
6.      The CV writer’s advise on the job market place can be invaluable
7.      Many services offer differing products to match your budget
8.      Most provide a guarantee
9.      Some have industry specific professionals to match your skills
10.  The majority of CV writers have HR and interviewing skills so they know what employers are looking for
11.  Most offer cover letters, supporting statements and other associated job application documents
12.  Some can support you throughout your career and develop your CV with you as your career develops
13.  CV writers can offer one to one interview coaching

Now, let us look at the pitfalls:

1.      Some CV writers just ‘farm out’ documents with no individual service
2.      Beware of CV writers that only want to deal via email – sometimes it’s nice to talk to the individual that is going to write your CV.
3.      CV writing companies can charge very small amounts or incredibly large amounts – at the moment on the internet companies are charging £10 - £1000 for a CV; how do you choose???? The cheapest isn’t always the best, but again £1000 is a lot of money. We’d suggest between £50 - £150 depending on your requirements is a fair charge.
4.      Most CV writers will take payment up front – do you trust that they are going to do what they say they are going to do?
5.      Poor work, no expertise and sloppy presentation

So to recap; calling a professional CV writing company can be very beneficial. However ensure you are happy with the person that you are speaking to – do they really understand what you are trying to get across on the CV or are they just interested in your money.

Writing someone’s CV is a very personal thing and CV writers should bond and build a strong rapport with their clients. Also check what others say about their services – most CV writing companies will have reviews on independent websites.

Again, if you don’t feel comfortable with the cost, skill base, personality etc of the service try another provider – there are enough of them out there!

How to write a great Cover Letter

In the current employment market place employers are starting to ask applicants to provide a variety of documents related to their application. These documents can include CVs / Resumes, Cover Letters, Supporting or Personal Statements as well as a completed application form.

At CVpal we always recommend sending your CV with a covering letter introducing yourself and also outlining the reasons for your application. The cover letter should cover certain aspects:
1. The job role you are applying for ( including any job reference number, date advertised and how you saw the advert i.e. name of website / newspaper etc).
2. A very brief outline of your career history; it is important not to repeat your CV therefore short overview will suffice.
3. Highlight your key skills.
4. Your availability for work and interviews.

Keep your cover letter brief, to the point and polite. As mentioned it is imperative that you do not repeat the wording in your cv.

We hope the above has helped and if you want further information about writing a cv, cover letter, supporting statement then contact CVpal on 01908 586393 or visit our website www.cvpal.co.uk

Thanks and good luck in your job search!!!

How to write an interview winning CV / Resume & Cover Letter

CV / Resume Writing Hints & Tips

To ensure your CV / Resume and Cover Letter gains maximum exposure with potential employers there are some simple things you should include prior to sending the documents. Initially ensure you have read the job specification that you are applying for correctly; understand exactly what the employer is looking for this will include skills, career experience, expertise and personal attributes.

Then simply match your skills etc to the job specification prior to writing anything on your CV. To start the CV set out your format for example you must include:
1. Your name, address, telephone contact numbers and email address.
2. Personal Profile
3. Key Skills / Qualifications / Achievements
4. Career History (chronologically from the most recent)
5. Interests / Other Information

If you use the above as a format you will not go wrong. Now comes the harder part of submitting content to the document!

Personal Profile - in this section clearly state what you can do, what you have done and what you would like to do. Always write this in the third person.

Key Skills etc.... - In this section we are allowed to match the skills you have to the job description.

Career History - List in chronological order starting from the most recent job all the information relating to where you worked, your position, dates of employment and the key responsibilities you had. Also include any key achievements you had whilst there.

Interests etc... Employers like to see that you are human, include sport interests, perhaps you do voluntary work etc...

Finally remember:
1. Write the CV in the third person.
2. If there are gaps on your CV try to minimise these with reasons for the gaps - perhaps you travelled, started a family etc.
3. Match your skills to the job
4. Try to keep the CV to 2 pages of A4
5. Keep the CV relevant to the job you are applying for
