How to write an interview winning CV / Resume & Cover Letter

CV / Resume Writing Hints & Tips

To ensure your CV / Resume and Cover Letter gains maximum exposure with potential employers there are some simple things you should include prior to sending the documents. Initially ensure you have read the job specification that you are applying for correctly; understand exactly what the employer is looking for this will include skills, career experience, expertise and personal attributes.

Then simply match your skills etc to the job specification prior to writing anything on your CV. To start the CV set out your format for example you must include:
1. Your name, address, telephone contact numbers and email address.
2. Personal Profile
3. Key Skills / Qualifications / Achievements
4. Career History (chronologically from the most recent)
5. Interests / Other Information

If you use the above as a format you will not go wrong. Now comes the harder part of submitting content to the document!

Personal Profile - in this section clearly state what you can do, what you have done and what you would like to do. Always write this in the third person.

Key Skills etc.... - In this section we are allowed to match the skills you have to the job description.

Career History - List in chronological order starting from the most recent job all the information relating to where you worked, your position, dates of employment and the key responsibilities you had. Also include any key achievements you had whilst there.

Interests etc... Employers like to see that you are human, include sport interests, perhaps you do voluntary work etc...

Finally remember:
1. Write the CV in the third person.
2. If there are gaps on your CV try to minimise these with reasons for the gaps - perhaps you travelled, started a family etc.
3. Match your skills to the job
4. Try to keep the CV to 2 pages of A4
5. Keep the CV relevant to the job you are applying for
